Professor Matthew Gibson (Matt) holds the Chair In Sustainable Biomaterials at the University of Manchester (October 2023-). He leads a diverse research team of chemists, microbiologists and cell biologists, deploying biomaterials approaches to global challenges. This has included new polymer materials capable of mimic ice binding (‘antifreeze’) proteins, new tools to cryopreserve biologics, low-cost diagnostics and materials for glycobiology. Matt was previously co-director (industry lead) for the MRC DTP in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Technologies, as well as co-directing UoW MRC Impact Acceleration Account. Matt’s team is support by the EU, ERC, UKRI, Leverhulme Trust and many industrial partners, as well as philanthropic donations. Matt co-founded Cryologyx to commercialise cryoprotectant technology and has licensed patents to various companies.
